Diesel Particulate Filters

DPF Issues? We’ve Got You Covered

DPF Regeneration & Repair

If your diesel car's suddenly coughing, wheezing, or flashing a warning light shaped like a toaster, chances are your DPF’s having a bit of a tantrum. And trust us, it’s best not to ignore it. A blocked Diesel Particulate Filter can leave your motor feeling flat, guzzle fuel, and eventually cause some wallet-draining damage if left to its own devices.
DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters) have been standard on most diesel cars since 2009 thanks to the Euro 5 emissions rules, and while they’re great for keeping soot out of the atmosphere, they’re not always great at keeping themselves clean - especially if your driving involves lots of short trips, school runs, or pottering about locally. These filters work by trapping soot from the exhaust gases, but over time they clog up and need a helping hand to clear.
Left unchecked, a blocked DPF can cause no end of grief - from limp mode and poor fuel economy to more serious engine and turbo problems. But don’t panic. Whether your filter needs a proper regeneration, a deep clean, or in worst-case scenarios a full replacement, we’re here to help.

Symptoms of a Blocked DPF

Think your DPF might be on strike? Keep an eye out for:
  • Dashboard warning light (usually like a mini exhaust cloud or engine symbol)
  • Reduced power or limp mode kicking in
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Engine rattling or harder starts
  • Increased smoke or smell from the exhaust
  • Regeneration attempts failing (more on that below)
If your car feels like it's lost its mojo, your DPF could be clogged with soot and ash. Ignoring it won’t make it go away - in fact, left too long, it can damage your engine or turbo. Best to nip it in the bud.

DPF Regeneration

Your DPF actually tries to clean itself through a process called regeneration. This happens automatically while you’re driving, provided a few Goldilocks-style conditions are met — hot enough, fast enough, long enough.
There are three types of regen:
  • Passive Regen – Happens on long motorway drives at higher speeds.
  • Active Regen – The car injects extra fuel to raise the exhaust temp.
  • Forced Regen – The big guns, usually done at a garage (like us).
If you mostly do short stop-start trips around town, regen might not get a proper chance to finish - which leads to blockages. If your car keeps trying to regen but fails, that’s where we come in.

DPF Cleaning

Before you jump to costly replacements, let’s talk cleaning.
We offer professional DPF cleaning services to restore your filter back to healthy working order. This involves using specialist equipment to flush out the build-up of soot and ash - improving flow, restoring performance, and saving you money.
Our cleaning service is ideal if your DPF is clogged but otherwise in decent nick.
  • More affordable than a replacement
  • Better for your car and the environment
  • Can often be done same-day
We’ll check first if cleaning’s a good option or if it’s too far gone.

DPF Replacement

Sometimes, cleaning just won’t cut it - particularly if the filter’s damaged, cracked, or the internal matrix has had it. In those cases, we can supply and fit a brand-new DPF.
We’ll always check diagnostics and cleaning options first before going down the replacement route. But if it needs doing, we’ll sort it quickly and properly - using quality parts and proper programming to make sure everything talks to the engine as it should.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still got questions? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one scratching your head over that strange dashboard light or wondering why your diesel’s acting up. Below are some of the most common DPF-related queries we get in the workshop. If you don’t see your question here, give us a bell we’re happy to help.

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) sits in your exhaust system and catches the tiny soot particles produced by diesel combustion. It helps reduce emissions and keeps your car within legal limits.

That light’s your car’s way of saying “I’m clogged!” It usually means the DPF’s getting too full of soot and regeneration hasn’t cleared it. It’s not always serious - but it won’t fix itself if ignored.

Technically yes, but we wouldn’t recommend it. A blocked DPF can cause loss of power, increased emissions, poor fuel economy, and damage to your turbo or engine if left too long. Best to get it looked at.

During regeneration, your car might idle differently, the fan might stay on after you turn the engine off, or you’ll notice a burning smell. Some cars also show higher RPMs or fuel use. If you’re unsure, we can check.

Short trips, lots of stop-start driving, poor fuel quality, or even a dodgy sensor can all mess with regeneration and lead to build-up. Modern diesels need a good motorway blast now and then to keep the DPF happy.

Not properly, no. There are additives you can buy, but they rarely work well once a DPF is already blocked. A proper clean needs specialist equipment — like the stuff we’ve got in our workshop.

It depends on your car and how bad the blockage is, but cleaning is nearly always cheaper than replacement. Pop in for a quote — we’ll only recommend a clean if we think it’ll work.

It might - until your next MOT or roadside check, when you could fail or face a hefty fine. DPF deletes are illegal on road cars in the UK. We don’t offer or recommend them.

Yes, if cleaning or regeneration won’t work. We can supply and fit a quality replacement, and make sure everything’s reprogrammed properly so it talks to your car’s ECU as it should.

Give your car a proper run now and then - 20+ minutes at motorway speeds helps regen. Use good quality fuel, service it regularly, and don’t ignore warning lights. We’ll also give you tailored advice after any work we do.
